One relatively new tool available is an insulin patch for diabetes. An insulin patch is a wearable device that offers an alternative to traditional injections, but is different than an insulin pump.

A Quick Look at Insulin Delivery Options

Before diving into insulin patches, let’s review some of our main insulin delivery methods:

  • Syringes and Vials: Involves manual dosing and injections. Up until the late 1990’s, this was the only way for most people with diabetes to administer insulin.
  • Insulin Pens: Insulin pens come in disposable pre-filled pens, or refillable pens with cartridges of insulin that need to be replaced after use.
  • Tubed Insulin Pumps: Insulin pumps deliver insulin continuously via a tube attached to the pump itself (that houses a cartridge with insulin) and a cannula inserted under the skin. An insulin pump delivers both basal and bolus insulin.
  • Patch Pumps: A patch pump operates very similar to a tubed insulin pump, just without a tube. The pump itself is a disposable patch that adheres directly to the skin with a cannula inserted under the skin. 
  • Insulin Patches: An insulin patch is a tubeless wearable device that adheres to the skin and delivers insulin without multiple daily injections. It can deliver basal and bolus insulin or just bolus insulin depending on the brand, and does not rely on technology. Insulin doses are given by pressing a manual button, and basal doses are set and cannot be adjusted.

Each method has its advantages depending on the your own lifestyle, insulin needs, and degree of comfort with diabetes technology.

The Rise of Wearable Insulin Technology

Innovation in diabetes care has led to a surge in wearable insulin technologies. Devices like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pump systems are giving people more freedom and control over their diabetes management… but they’re not for everyone. For many people with diabetes, especially those looking for an easier daily routine, insulin patches are becoming an attractive option. These patches combine convenience and discretion and can make diabetes management feel less medical and more manageable.

How Does the Insulin Patch Work?

So, how does the insulin patch work exactly? Unlike traditional syringe or insulin pen injections, insulin patches are worn directly on the skin, typically for 2-3 days. There is no technology involved. The patch activates (and insulin is given in a set dose) simply by pushing manual button. 

Some insulin patches do not deliver a continuous basal dose of insulin like a patch pump. They are only used to give bolus doses of insulin when needed.

Key Differences: Insulin Patches vs. Patch Pumps

Patch pumps are an insulin pump in patch form, and insulin patches are simpler tools for specific insulin needs. The key differences between an insulin patch and an insulin patch pump are:

  1. Insulin Patch (without electronics) – These deliver insulin in fixed doses with manual activation. Typically pre-set, bolus-only and/or non-adjustable basal insulin settings. Ex: CeQur and V-Go.
  2. Patch Pumps – Fully advanced insulin pump system, includes a small mechanical pump, and sometimes connect to a controller or smartphone. More sophisticated, includes basal and bolus control. Ex: Omnipod.

In general, insulin patches are more discreet and easier to travel with than an insulin pump. But, your own diabetes management and needs will best determine which device is most appropriate for you.

Wearing the Insulin Patch on Arm and Other Sites

Many people choose to wear the insulin patch on their arm, abdomen, thigh, or lower back. Placement depends on personal comfort. The arm is a popular choice due to easy access and minimal interference with clothing.

It’s important to rotate patch placement to prevent skin irritation and ensure consistent insulin absorption.

Do Insulin Patches Hurt?

Generally speaking, no. Insulin patches are designed to be comfortable. They use a small cannula or needle that inserts just under the skin when the patch is applied. People often report a mild pinch during application but very little sensation while wearing the patch.

Compared to multiple daily injections, most people find patches to be less painful.

The CeQur Insulin Patch

I recently attended the 2025 Today’s Dietitian Annual Symposium and one of the event sponsors was CeQur: a new FDA-approved insulin patch option for people with type 2 diabetes. The official name is CeQur Simplicity®. It’s an FDA-approved insulin patch for type 2 diabetes and provides up to 3 days of mealtime (bolus) insulin.

What was most intriguing to me is how much it looked like a typical patch insulin pump… but yet, this is not a replacement for an insulin pump. Instead, the ideal candidate for the CeQur insulin patch is someone with type 2 diabetes on insulin injections, but not ready for an insulin pump.

There are no electronics involved with the insulin patch. Just press a button on the patch to deliver a preset amount of insulin (currently the only FDA-approved option is doses of 2 units.) No tubing, no syringes, and no programming.

It doesn’t deliver basal insulin, so it’s intended for people who already use long-acting insulin. At the time I’m writing this post, CeQur is the only insulin patch like this on the market. This type of bolus-only insulin patch fills a unique niche for people who want to simplify their bolus regimen without switching to a full insulin pump.

V-Go Insulin Patch

The V‑Go insulin patch delivers both basal and bolus insulin in adults with type 2 diabetes using rapid-acting insulin. Worn like a credit‑card‑sized patch for 24 hours, it delivers a preset basal rate (20 U, 30 U, or 40 U per 24 hours) that cannot be changed, and allows mealtime bolus dosing in 2‑unit doses. V‑Go is fully mechanical, no technology. It’s water‑resistant (can be worn in the shower) and intended for simple, on‑the‑go insulin delivery without injections.

Like CeQur, there is no connectivity to glucose monitors, no alerts, and no automatic logging. Its appeal is simplicity.

Insulin Patch Price and Coverage

When it comes to the insulin patch price, cost is a key consideration. Prices vary depending on insurance coverage. To date, insulin patches may cost around $100–$150 per month (without insurance), depending on frequency of use.

It’s important to check with your provider or pharmacy to understand your specific out-of-pocket costs.
